What is legacy giving?

Legacy giving refers to arranging charitable donations as part of your estate or financial plan. These gifts can take place during your lifetime.

They more commonly take effect after passing away, allowing you to leave a lasting impact on causes you’re passionate about.

Some of the most common examples are:

  • Bequests: This is the most popular method, where you leave a specific sum of money, an asset, or a percentage of your estate in your ill.
  • Life insurance: Some donors designate a charity as the beneficiary of a policy.
  • Retirement assets: You can also name a charity to receive the remainder of your accounts.
  • Endowments: These are permanently invested funds that provide an ongoing, sustainable stream of income to your chosen cause.

How legacy gifts make an impact

Every legacy gift goes directly to our portfolio of charities that support causes like rainforest restoration, protection of marine ecosystems, climate change initiatives and more. Here’s what that looks like in practice.

Forests

Forests aren’t just victims of environmental change. They’re also part of the solution. Protecting and restoring them stabilises soils and water cycles, preserves biodiversity and locks away carbon at scale.

Scientists warn that continued forest loss in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Southeast Asia could push these systems past a tipping point, turning carbon sinks into carbon sources. Legacy gifts help fund indigenous land rights secured through advocacy, protected areas that outlast political cycles and legal enforcement against illegal logging.

Ocean protection

Oceans regulate global climate and support marine life at a scale land-based action can’t replace. Legacy gifts fund protected areas, sustainable fishing enforcement and the science behind identifying which waters need protection most. This work has already helped protect hundreds of thousands of square kilometres of ocean.

Climate change and emissions

Cutting emissions at the source is one of the most urgent levers available. Legacy gifts support evidence-based initiatives that reduce greenhouse gases directly. Funding also helps with the regenerative agriculture programmes that transform land use at scale. Financing can even help turn farmland into a long-term carbon sink rather than a source of emissions.

Environmental law and accountability

Some environmental progress comes from the courtroom. Legal action can force polluters to change practices, block harmful projects before they start and set precedents that outlast single campaigns. Legacy gifts sustain this kind of legal work, which often takes years to accomplish.

Data and nature markets

Effective climate action depends on knowing where money and attention are most needed. Legacy gifts also support the data and market infrastructure that helps organisations understand and reduce their impact on nature.

How we support your legacy gifts

With so many worthy causes, it can feel overwhelming to choose where your legacy gift goes.

Our team ensures your donations deliver the outcomes you want your loved ones to experience. Some of the types of legacy gifts we support include:

Planned giving

Also known as gifts in Wills, this is a provision that ensures the Global Returns Project receives a fixed sum, percentage or residual gift after your passing.

Major lifetime gifts

These donations made during your lifetime are used to fund projects like protecting areas of ocean or rainforest, supporting legal cases challenging pollution or establishing multi-year programmes within one of our portfolio sectors like regenerative agriculture or forest restoration.

Restricted or designated gifts

You can direct your legacy gift to causes such as rainforest protection, marine conservation, environmental law enforcement, regenerative agriculture or community-led conservation.

Structured philanthropy

You can partner with us if you represent longer-term initiatives such as charitable trusts aligned with forest conservation, donor-advised funds dedicated to climate action or multi-year committed giving programmes.

Corporate and institutional legacies

Larger organisations, foundations and family offices can establish ongoing funding relationships with the Global Returns Project to embed environmental philanthropy into organisational strategy.

How we support your legacy gifts

What your legacy gift funds

The Global Returns Project supports six vetted nature and climate charities, representing a diversified selection of solutions. Here are highlights on what our charities have achieved so far:

  • Regenerative agriculture (Rainforest Alliance) — 6 million hectares of farmland where regenerative practices are being adopted
  • Ocean protection (Blue Marine Foundation) — 446,620 km² of ocean protected
  • Environmental law (ClientEarth) — 30 legal actions launched and 240 active cases in the past year
  • Forest restoration (Trillion Trees) — 712,044 total trees planted and routinely monitored
  • Data tools and insights (Global Canopy) — 16,000+ uses of ENCORE, enabling thousands of organisations to explore and understand their impacts on nature
  • Rainforest protection (Rainforest Trust) — 9.7 billion tonnes CO₂ equivalents stored in protected areas

Legacy gifts power these outcomes at scale, ensuring the work continues long into the future.

What makes us different

Evidence-based selection

We’ve screened over 20,000 climate and nature charities to find the ones making the biggest impact at scale. Our Technical Advisory Board is made up of experts including a former Lead Author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and #25 on the Reuters list of the world’s top climate scientists.

They oversee a review of our portfolio every six months.

100% to charities

Our operational costs are supported completely separately by a dedicated group of philanthropic funders. Every pound of your legacy goes directly to the charity you support. We don’t charge any administrative fees or take deductions.

Regular, detailed reports

All legacy donors can receive six-monthly impact reports highlighting outcomes. Donors even receive invitations to events and charity briefings, along with the opportunity to connect with the charities they’re supporting.

Driving systemic change

Every donation sends a signal that our model has momentum, credibility and collective belief behind it.

Your gift therefore works twice. It funds urgent solutions for the planet today, and it becomes proof that helps unlock larger support tomorrow.

Together, GRP donors are creating more than impact. They are creating leverage and shifting how the world decides what environmental philanthropy is worth backing.

Taking the next step

Whether you’re considering a gift in your Will, planning a major lifetime donation, or exploring structured philanthropy options, we’re here to help.
