1. About us

The Global Returns Project is a project brought to you by the Global Returns Project Limited (“we”, “us” and “our”). We are a not-for-profit limited company registered in England and Wales with company number No.11882899. We are also registered with the Charity Committee for England and Wales with number 1186683. Our registered office is at 50 Winchester Street, London, United Kingdom, SW1V 4NH.

We are the data controller of, and responsible for, any personal data you provide to us, and we are registered with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office under number ZA540861.

2. What personal data do we collect?

‘Personal data’ means any data which can be associated with you as an individual, either directly or indirectly. We collect different information depending on how you use our site, interact with us and support us.

The personal data we may collect includes:

  • Identity and contact information, such as your name, address, email address and telephone details.
  • Information about how you have supported us, including the amount of your donations, which charities you have selected, and if you have donated through the Gift Aid scheme.
  • Usage data about how you use our site. General, aggregated, demographic, and non-personal data (such as aggregated anonymous information about website usage) may be collected by us.
  • Technical data, such as the device you are using to access our site, your unique device ID, your internet protocol (IP), browser type and version, time zone, display settings, browser plug-in types and versions, operating system and platform and other technology on the devices you use to access our site.
  • Marketing and communications data, including your communications to and from us, and your preferences in receiving notifications, marketing and other communications from us.

We do not ask for ‘special categories’ of personal data on our website. ‘Special category’ data includes details about your race or ethnicity, religious or philosophical beliefs, sex life, sexual orientation, political opinions or trade union membership or health information.

3. How we collect personal data

Different personal data is collected in different ways.

a) Personal data you provide to us

If you sign up to our mailing list or join our Project, we collect your contact details and marketing preferences.

If you donate to us, we will collect your contact details (name, email address, billing address and your donation amounts), the charities you have selected, and whether or not you have made your donations via Gift Aid. We never have access to your payment information, as you give this direct to our payment processors (see section 7 below – ‘How we share personal data’).

We collect information that you provide when you contact us (whether by email, through our site, via social media or otherwise). We may also ask you for information if you report a problem with our site.

b) Personal data we collect as you use our site

As you use our site, we will collect your technical, usage and transaction data as described above.

Some of this data is collected using cookies, beacons and similar technologies. Cookies are files with small amount of data which are sent to your browser (or device) from our site and stored on your device. For more information, please see section 5 below (‘Cookies’).

4. How and why we use personal data

We will only use your information where:

a) We need the information to fulfil a contract with you 

For example, if you donate to us, we will use your data to effect your donation, and if you correspond with us or ask a question, we will need to use your contact details to reply.

If you (or your organisation) provide us with a service we will use your contact information (and any associated billing or account information) for this purpose.

b) We have a legitimate interest (reasonable purpose) in doing so

We will use your information for our legitimate operational reasons where our doing so will not unduly affect your rights.

If you donate to us (via our site or otherwise), we will use your contact details and transaction information to manage and plan our fundraising efforts.

We will use your technical and usage information to:

  • Provide and make improvements to our site, and for system maintenance, support, reporting and hosting of data, and troubleshooting.
  • Ensure that content from our site is presented in the most effective manner for you and for your device.
  • Ensure that our site is secure.
  • Analyse how users interact with our site.

If you (or your organisation) has offered to provide us with a service, we may use your contact information for business development purposes.

We may also use any or all of the information above to administer and manage the our site and the Global Returns Project in general, to detect and prevent misuse of our site (including fraud and unauthorised payments), and to enforce our Terms or any other contract to which we may be a party. If you feel that your interests and fundamental rights outweigh our business purposes, and that we should therefore stop processing your data, please let us know.

c) You have given us your consent

If you have consented to sign up to our mailing list, we will use your contact details to keep in touch for marketing purposes.

d) We need to comply with a legal or regulatory obligation

In certain circumstances, we may need to retain or use your personal data to comply with regulations and/or the law.

6. Children

Our site is not intended to be used by children. We do not knowingly collect any person data about children under the age of 18.

7. How we share personal data

We will share your data with our trusted third party service providers. These include our information technology providers, such as website and mailing list hosts, and our professional advisors whom we retain for advice in respect of our operations. We will only disclose your data to third party service providers under terms of confidentiality, and they will only use your personal data for the purposes stated in this notice.

If you choose to support us through the Gift Aid scheme, we will need to provide certain information (your name, the first line of your address, your post code, and the date and amount of your donation) to HMRC in order to claim the extra funds.

On rare occasions, we may share personal data when we believe it is necessary to comply with the law, regulation or legal request (including a court order or government inquiry); to enforce or apply our terms of use or other agreements; in the context of a reorganisation or restructuring exercise; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of the Global Returns Project, our employees, or others.

Our payment processing providers for online donations are iATS (for card payments) and SmartDebit (for direct debit payments). If you support us by making a donation, you provide your payment information to the relevant payment processor direct, so we never have access to it. 8. International transfers

Where we or our providers transfer personal data outside of the EU to a recipient in a third country in the absence of an adequacy decision by the European Commission, we take care to ensure that our data exports are compliant with data privacy law. We do this by relying on the Standard Contractual Clauses and/or Binding Corporate Rules. 9. Data security

The safety of your personal data is of paramount important to us, and we use various technical and organisational measures to ensure that your data is secure.

No transmission of information via the Internet or electronic storage is ever completely secure. Although we take appropriate measures to safeguard against unauthorised disclosures of information, we cannot guarantee the security of your data.

10. How long we keep personal data

We will only retain your personal data for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.  If you contact us, we may keep a record of that correspondence.

To determine the appropriate retention period for personal data, we consider the amount, nature, and sensitivity of the personal data, the potential risk of harm from unauthorised use or disclosure of your personal data, the purposes for which we process your personal data and whether we can achieve those purposes through other means, and the applicable legal requirements.

Our site may contain links to third party sites whose information practices may be different than ours. Please consult all third party sites’ privacy notices, as we have no control over information that is submitted to, or collected by, third parties.

  • require that we restrict the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances;
  • request access to the personal data that we hold about you;
  • require that, in certain circumstances, we delete the personal information we hold about you;
  • require that we provide you with the information that we hold about you in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format; and/or
  • withdraw your consent (where we are relying on your consent to process the data, such as for marketing purposes).

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office, which is the UK supervisory authority for data protection issues (www.ico.org.uk).
