Restoring the world’s forests, one thriving ecosystem at a time
Diverse forest restoration is a powerful tool in addressing the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. When done effectively, it restores whole landscapes, sequesters carbon and protects biodiversity.
Born from the combined expertise of BirdLife International, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Trillion Trees is on a mission to end deforestation and restore one trillion trees by 2050 – by planting the right trees, in the right places.
From planting trees to restoring ecosystems
Tree planting has become one of the most widely proposed solutions to the climate crisis. However, not all tree planting is equal. Monocultures, or plantations of a single, fast-growing species, make up 45% of newly planted forests. Yet, these poorly designed restoration projects replace complex natural ecosystems with simplified, fragile landscapes.
In contrast, Trillion Trees is planting diverse forests with native species that support ecological processes and rebuild habitats for wildlife. Diverse restoration can store over 70% more carbon than monocultures.
Trillion Trees also recognises the central role of local communities in creating healthy ecological systems that capture carbon, nurture wildlife and strengthen resilience.
Why Trillion Trees matters
Forests are the foundation of a stable planet. They regulate rainfall, cool the air and sustain 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. Yet we’ve already lost half of Earth’s forest cover. Restoring it isn’t just an act of repair – it’s an act of resilience.
Trillion Trees focuses on lasting success. Their long-term partnerships ensure that restored forests survive and thrive. By embedding restoration projects within local economies, they create incentives for conservation that endure.
This isn’t about planting for the sake of planting. It’s about re-establishing living ecosystems capable of absorbing carbon, supporting communities and rebalancing the planet’s systems.
